Impressive Green Luxury Limousine

The luxury British car manufacturer Lotus has given you another reason to swell with national pride as they have just released a new concept car which looks like it will surpass even the most environmentally friendly vehicle on the road. The Trifuel Exige 270E is a methanol powered vehicle which will not compromise any of its speed, and will also be the most powerful road-going Exige ever, as well as revealing some unique green technology.

The 270E still runs on the Exige’s standard supercharged engine but it has been modified to run on three different types of fuel – methanol, ethanol or petrol. The impressive part about this new design is that it can run on any combination of its three fuels so unlike other multi-fuelled vehicles, it only needs one tank.

Methanol is also a much easier to handle environmentally friendly fuel as it is liquid at room temperature so there is no need for the costly high pressure tanks which you see in the hydrogen powered vehicles. Not only is the methanol easier to store, but it also combusts more fuel efficiently, even more efficiently than diesel.

But the jewel in the crown of Lotus’ new green machine is that the methanol fuel can be synthesised from hydrogen and carbon dioxide, removing one of the most harmful players in the global warming game. Unfortunately to convert the carbon dioxide you have to catch it and there is no simple way to recover the gas from the atmosphere just yet.

However Lotus is confident that when the technology catches up, their methanol powered vehicle, and the technology, will be the way of the future. The 270E is also not a concept car which will make it to production, but was rather just a vehicle in which to showcase their new fuel technology.

Instead, Lotus will convert any standard vehicle to run on methanol for around £40, giving you not only a more environmentally friendly vehicle, but also one with extra power, vroom! Methanol actually has a higher octane rating than petrol and so the output in the lotus’ standard engine for example jumps from 237 bhp to 267 bhp.
