A Limousine Just to be Different

If you have taken a close look at the limousine industry lately, you will see that there are a lot of new concepts out there which seem to have been created, just to allow the manufacturers and the subsequent passengers to be different.

Asking why you would stretch out an already intimidating Hummer, why you would paint a fire engine pink or why you would stretch a Smart Car which was designed to be small and turn it into a limousine, is often a fruitless exercise and if you are not in the group of people who are rushing out to hire these limousines, it is best to put them in the ‘to each his own’ category and move on.

Another new vehicle which is heading straight for this ever growing category is the Hako Coupe, part of Toyota’s Scion brand. The Scion brand is not actually seen in the UK as its main demographic is young Americans with more money than sense. However, the new concept was unveiled at the New York Auto Show where it received almost across the board dislike.

Which is not surprising when you see it because not only is the concept car orange, it is also an even more boxier, version of the Scion’s xB. In fact, that was the whole point of this new concept, as the VP of Scion, Jack Hollis has admitted ‘This concept is the sporty version of a box’.

But when have you ever looked at a box and thought, I wish that was sporty enough for me to drive?! And when has anyone ever looked at a box and thought, I wish my car looked like that?! But the idea of the sporty box concept car is to combine Japanese and American youth culture in a compact and bold package. With the vertical windscreen and the short nose, it is both compact and bold alright.
